Marble
Many people associate marble with luxurious, opulent rooms. But that need not be the case! Used thoughtfully, this noble stone, already used by the ancient Greeks, also has its place in your home and enhances it.
Formation and properties of marble
Marble is a metamorphic rock formed through the recrystallisation of limestone or dolomite under high pressure and high temperatures. It forms deep beneath the earth’s surface and mixes there with various minerals. These create its special range of colours and the typical veins that give every marble its unmistakable pattern. Pure marble, like that used by Michelangelo, is snow white. Marble also owes its effect to its texture and structure, which stand out more on a smooth surface than on a rough one. It consists of calcite crystals (calcitic marble) or dolomite (dolomitic marble). The name comes from ancient Greek: marmaros means “shining, gleaming”. Marble is a strong, robust stone that lasts for decades.
A wide choice of marble patterns
Marble offers a wide choice of colours. Thanks to small crystals in its structure, it comes in white, grey, black, pink, blue, red and even green. Because of its many patterns, it is popular worldwide and suits every design and material.

Caring for marble
Marble surfaces do not need much effort, but compared with granite they need a little more care. A soft cloth, water or a mild cleaner are enough for cleaning. As a metamorphic rock, marble is constantly changing. It is particularly sensitive to acids, great heat, acid rain and the minerals in hard water. Some see this very change as part of its charm. If you do not want it, you can prevent reactions with suitable protective products. Sealing is especially advisable where coloured liquids may be spilt. Would you like to know more about care? Visit the Marnit showroom. We are happy to advise you and recommend the care that will keep your marble surfaces looking good and shining.
