How do you clean marble?

Marble stands for elegance and sophistication and enhances any room. It offers many patterns and suits different styles, which is why this natural stone is so popular. But what about cleaning and care? We show you what care marble surfaces need to keep their timeless look and shine.

Marble is a porous stone that only stays beautiful in the long term with the right care. Its soft structure makes it easier to work, but also more prone to stains, scratches and other damage. So choose cleaning products and methods carefully.

Marble is a calcareous metamorphic rock consisting mainly of calcium carbonate.

Marble is a beautiful, timeless natural stone for worktops, tables, floors, showers and more. It can be used in many ways. It is not hard to clean, but it does need to be treated properly. With these tips you can care for marble properly in every room and avoid damage.

Did you know? Stains in marble can be removed with flour or starch. This dries out the stain without leaving marks on the stone.

Mild cleaning products

The most important thing in marble care: no strong cleaning products. Never use scouring agents or coarse cloths that could scratch the marble. Avoid products containing lemon, vinegar or other acids. Granular cleaners with abrasive particles and coarsely woven cloths also scratch the surface.

Clean marble with soft cotton cloths and neutral cleaners. There are special marble cleaners, but ordinary washing-up liquid also works well. Mix a little washing-up liquid with water in a spray bottle or put a few drops on a damp cloth. Wipe the surface with a soft cloth and rinse immediately. Then dry the marble with a soft cloth so that no water marks form. Polishing adds extra shine.

Deal with stains quickly

If something is spilt, act immediately. Blot up the liquid, taking care not to smear and spread it, just blot it with kitchen roll. Rinse the area straight away with water and mild washing-up liquid until the stain has gone. Then dry the area thoroughly with a soft cloth. You need to react especially quickly to alcohol and citrus juices.

Prevention is the way to go

With marble too, prevention is better than cure. Coasters for glasses, especially those containing alcohol or citrus juices, and trivets for hot pans prevent damage. Sealing with suitable protective products also provides good protection.

The right marble care in every room

These recommendations apply to most marble surfaces. But depending on the room, there are particular points to note.

How do you clean marble floors?

Marble floors in the home need regular care because they scratch easily. Wipe them often with a clean, untreated, dry dust cloth to protect them from sand and dirt. When vacuuming marble, make sure the attachments and wheels do not leave marks. A steam cleaner is suitable for stubborn dirt, but use it with care. Dry the surface well after cleaning.

Non-slip rugs or doormats at entrances and exits stop dirt being carried in. Put furniture on pads or glides to avoid dents and scratches.

How do you clean marble worktops?

Marble worktops are a particular challenge, because acidic ingredients are often used when cooking. Always use a chopping board; silicone mats that stop anything coming into direct contact with the worktop are also useful. React immediately if lemon juice, vinegar or tomato juice is spilt. Although marble is heat-resistant, we still recommend trivets for hot pans.

How do you clean a marble table?

Marble table tops face similar risks to worktops. Always use coasters and mats, whether glasses, crockery and kitchen appliances are hot or cold. Remove spills immediately and wipe the surface dry so that no water marks form.

How do you clean a marble shower?

In the bathroom, the aim is to prevent soap deposits. Marble shower walls need special attention. Ideally clean them after every shower so that no soap residue builds up. A gentle squeegee helps. If the dirt cannot be removed this way, use special products for deep cleaning. You can also use a steam cleaner here. Wipe and dry the surface immediately afterwards.
