Planning stone window sills? Here is what you should know
Are you building your home, or replacing your windows and redesigning your rooms? Windows are an essential part of every flat, office, house and commercial building. They let in daylight, and through them we ventilate and bring fresh air into our rooms. The window sill belongs to the window and forms its lower edge. It drains water away and also has aesthetic value. It can be made of different materials and adds colour accents to interior walls or the facade. The choice of material is crucial, and natural stone offers many advantages here.
What does the indoor window sill do?
The indoor window sill primarily protects the wall below the window. In the living space it also serves as a decorative surface and shelf, usually for house plants. So indoor window sills can considerably enhance your rooms, which makes choosing the right material all the more important. It is best to decide at the same time as choosing the windows. There is a wide choice of materials and colours. The most common are wood, HPL laminate, PVC and, of course, natural stone. The latter offers many advantages.\n\nAmong stone window sills, marble is particularly popular. With its beautiful, elegant appearance it enhances any room. Marble window sills are suitable for indoors and outdoors. The maximum length depends on the type and thickness and is around 2.5 to 3 m.\n\nGranite window sills are also chosen very often. They are slightly grainier and harder and much more resistant to impact and weather, so they are also suitable for outdoor use. The maximum length is likewise around 2.5 to 3 m. Granite slabs come in 2 or 3 cm thicknesses.
What does the outdoor window sill do?
The outdoor window sill mainly protects the facade from weather and dirt. The dirt stays on the window sill and never reaches the facade, thanks to the drip groove on the underside. The window sill must project far enough beyond the facade. A dirty window sill is much quicker to clean than a facade.\n\nThere is also a wide choice of materials and colours for outdoors. For stone window sills, granite is the most suitable. It is much harder than most other materials and therefore more resistant to weather and mechanical damage. It does not warp and leaves no rust marks on the facade.
What are the advantages of a stone window sill?
Stone window sills are long-lasting – especially compared with other materials. Wooden window sills, still found in many homes, are prone to mould and cracks. Metal can leave oxidation marks over the years, and plastic can warp. Natural stone is much more resistant to weather, moisture and time. Its physical properties show that stone is the most durable material. Marble is also suitable for outdoor window sills: it is hard, dense and has good compressive strength. Only the colour may change slightly and the surface become a little rougher. Natural stone is also very resistant to heat and frost.
Stone window sills are also beautiful to look at – You can choose from many shades of white, cream, black, grey, brown and green. Natural stone comes in almost every shade, with beautiful natural patterns that bring your home to life. Unique patterns are typical of natural stone, and you will hardly find two completely identical pieces. Indoor stone window sills particularly enhance your rooms and give them a touch of elegance.
Care is very simple – stains form much less easily on stone, and it gets less dirty. What does build up is easy to clean. Follow a few rules: never clean calcareous stones with acids or other corrosive products. Also, unlike other materials, natural stone does not shrink or crumble by itself, and granite does not change colour.
